The history of the Shih Tzu

Mythical origins

This dog breed originated in Asia, more precisely from Tibet. In fact, the name “Shih Tzu” comes from the Tibetan word for “lion dog”. This name comes from a Tibetan legend, in which the Shih Tzu would be related to the snow lion, a mythical animal that symbolizes joy and vivacity. This has also earned the breed a reputation of being a particularly prestigious dog.

The Shih Tzu is often confused with the Lhasa Apso, despite the many differences between the two breeds. It is actually a cross between a Pekingese and a Lhasa Apso.

The Empress of Beijing’s Forbidden City, Cixi, made the Shih Tzu her pet in the 19th century. Nicknamed “the empress’s pearl”, the breed quickly became popular.

A late encounter with the West

After China became a republic around 1912, the breed gradually migrated to Europe and the West. They arrived in Great Britain around 1930, where they were nurtured by Lady Brownrigg, who is credited with initiating Shih Tzu breeding in Europe. It was following an exhibition of this dog in the “Tibetan dog” category that breed-specific characteristics were imposed and the Shih Tzu was separated from the Lhasa Apso. At the same time, in 1935, the name was formalized, but it wasn’t until the 1940s that the dog was officially recognized by The Kennel Club.

The breed was introduced to France in 1953 by the Countess d’Anjou following a trip to China. After the Second World War, the breed was allowed to participate in competitions and shows.

The physical characteristics of the Shih Tzu
