American Staffordshire Terrier
The breed has the strength of a Bulldog and the agility of a Terrier, two breeds from which it originated at the beginning of the 19th century. Originally, it was created to be trained for fighting. It thus has highly developed muscles and impressive power despite its medium size. It can weigh up to 31 kilos for a 48 cm long dog. Nevertheless, the American Staffordshire Terrier is an endearing, kind, and intelligent companion dog. In Great Britain, it is even nicknamed the “Nanny dog” for its gentleness and courage. He also accompanies the elderly to entertain them in retirement homes. Its life expectancy is between 12 and 16 years.
It is an excellent watchdog, alert and attentive. The American Staffordshire Terrier needs daily exercise. If you are sporty, this breed will be happy to accompany you while you’re jogging.
This breed is also headstrong and intelligent. In order to train him/her as well as possible, start at a young age with authority and firmness. Show perseverance and as much stubbornness as it does. Always make sure you maintain a positive upbringing, brutality can bring out a vicious side in this breed.
Its hair is short, coarse, and glossy. It exists in different colors. However, dogs with more than 80% white have more predisposition to deafness, as well as “black and tan” coats.
The American Staffordshire Terrier does not present any hereditary disease.
