Calico and tortoise shell cat breeds
Calico and tortoiseshell cats have several colors present in their coat. It is therefore not a breed per se, but a coat color.
The tortoiseshell pattern is described as a coat mixing “red” (but also other colors such as cinnamon or chocolate) and black colors. These different colors can be mixed, or appear as spots.
Concerning calico cats, their coat is usually three-quarters white with orange and black patches. Each calico cat has a unique coat!
It is common to hear that tortoiseshell or calico cats have a rather pronounced character! In addition, they are very good companions, who are faithful to their owner.
Calico cats are typically females. In fact, according to a study conducted by the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri, one out of 3,000 calico cats are male.
Persians, British Shorthairs, Maine Coons, American Curls and Norwegians are a few breeds that can have calico or tortoiseshell coats.
